A masterful novel links to science, chemistry, history, and
patriotism. For English literature student better consider this work. A novel
that shines with perfect words. She honestly describes many things on Indian
customs in sixties to seventies including arranged married and how oldest
sister took job as mother to her younger siblings.
Jhumpa Lahiri is a recipient
Pulitzer Prize and an intellectually elegant writer. A family story wrap in
history with brilliant language. Her work is really inspiring. This is the second novel of Lahiri that I’ve read after
Unaccustomed Earth. This edition, a 415 -page novel,
was published in 2014. It is little weird to me since there are no quotation marks in whole direct sentences in the whole pages. I began read this book in Banjarmasin, South Borneo at a coffee
shop in Duta Mall and it’s accomplished in second day December 2014 in a vacation.
The Lowland (2014), a novel by Jhumpa Lahiri: summary
Part one described the lowland in where nearby of the pasture of
golf club. The story of two brothers, Subhash and Udayan that often played to
that neighborhood even it’s forbidden for the locals. A British golf club owned
to colonial British when occupied Calcutta. Tollygunge, an area has turned
Muslims to minority because of the Partition.
Subhash as older brother have contrast behavior in many aspect and
even in choosing school. The boys studied assiduously every evening, working on
equation and formulas. They were admitted to the city’s best colleges. Udayan
the younger brother went to physics and Subhash for chemical engineering. They
were the only boys in their neighborhood, the only students form their
unremarkable high school, to have done so well.
After their study ended, the brothers were among so many others in
their generation, overqualified and unemployed. After tutoring to bring in
money finally found a job teaching science at technical high school close to
his town. He’s indifferent to building up the career. His brother decided to
apply Ph.D program chemistry and environment in Rhode island,
USA. Udayan, accused his brother selfish not think his country. He joined
Communist Party of India (Marxist- Leninist), CPI, their enemy is India state.
The different was so extreme that he could not accommodate his
home town and Rhode Island together. In that enormous new country, there seemed
to be nowhere for the old to reside. There’re a place where humanity not always
pushing, rushing, running as if with a fire at his back. A Wisconsin guy,
student of sociology who wrote the editorial for the university newspaper
shared kitchen and bathroom with Subhash. His roommate was a good friend and
also brought Subhash to western community.
In his letter, Udayan told him much about movement party that he
joined and he had married to a girl. Gauri was degree of psychology in same
university to him and also sister of his friend. Not only had Udayan before his
older brother, but he’d married of his choosing.
Subhash wanted to tell his brother about Holly, medical student, a
widow with a boy in whom he act like husband
and father. He began his third autumn in Rode island, it was in 1971 when he
got a telegram, “Udayan killed. Come back if you can.” Udayan shot by police and without
knowing that his wife’s pregnant. Since losing his husband, Gauri was in reject
position. Her in-laws treatment of Gauri was deliberately intended to drive
out. The thought of the child being raised in a joyless house and the only way
to take her away was to marry her.
She left Tollygunge, Calcutta, where she had never felt welcome,
where she had gone only for Udayan. This was death, Gauri thought, this vapor,
insubstansial but unyielding, drawing everything to halt. No policeman or
soldier stop him. No more investigation questioned her about Udayan. It’s only
Bela, Udayan’s daughter to make them in the same roof. Subash took Bela
visiting their home town but getting home he found a letter
left from Gauri. After getting her doctoral degree in psychology, Gauri had moved to
California, a college hired her for teaching.
Subhash, tender, and loving father raised her daughter
by himself. The happiness was coming. He was good in his career and found a
woman at last. It was not only her mother has left her but knowing Subhash was
not his father irritated that girl. Years passed. Subash and Bela found joy in
their life in contrast to Gauri. She’d tormented by her past to leave Subhash
and her daughter. After mailing several times, Gauri’d come seeking Bela. She
was grown woman, nearly forty years old. Her mother visiting was shockingly to
Bela. She welcomed coldly to a woman to whom her daughter should
be call grandmother.

Sekapur Sirih
Novel setebal 415 halaman, karya dari Jhumpa Lahiri seorang
penulis berdarah Benggali berkewarganegaraan Amerika Serikat.
di AS.
daerah Tollygunge, Kalkutta, India.
Keduanya rajin belajar setiap malam, mempelajari
persamaan dan rumus-rumus.
Keduanya pun diterima di dua universitas ternama di kotanya,
Udayan mengambil jurusan fisika sementara kakaknya jurusan teknik kimia.
Setelah perkuliahan selesai mereka memberi les sebelum akhirnya diterima
Suaminya bahkan
belum mengetahui jikalau istrinya tengah mengandung anaknya.
Gauri pun mengikuti perkuliahan
hingga meraih doktor psikologi.
